Overall opinion
Don’t be fooled by York St. John’s relatively new university status. As an institution it has been around a long time, far longer than its ‘redbrick’ neighbour. York St John has held an excellent reputation as a teacher training college and it is a popular destination for PGCE and postgraduate theology study. Overall, York St. John is a hidden gem! An excellent university, with modern facilities and character, but its real strength lies in the quality of its teaching staff. Added to this is its fantastic location next to the city centre and the venue of York Minster for the degree award ceremonies. I highly recommend York St. John as a small, academic, modern and thriving university.
Quality of course and lecturers
I experienced first hand the quality of staff within the History department, but had many friends did a wide range of subjects including Theology, Sports Science and teacher training (PGCE). Being a relatively small university York St. John has a feel community feel to it and so as a student your are more than just a number, there is the opportunity to really get to know your staff and they are very welcoming of further questions and providing extra assistance if you need it, many of had an open door policy and one could just pop their office to see them or at least make an appointment. The content of my course was excellent the History department had its fair share of academic renown, many of the lecturers being real subject matter experts in their chosen areas, and the department could claim a healthy number of publications. This meant the lecture content was both interesting, relevant and challenging.
University facilities
The Library facilities were impressive for such a small university, but like at many places, key texts could be hard to get hold of near deadline dates. That said, it you planned ahead there were options to order books in from other libraries whilst the electronic journal catalogue was very useful and well used. In addition York St. John has some excellent indoor and outdoor sports facilities. York St. John has a notoriously small Union building, although this may have been expanded since I left. It never mattered much in any case… Being situated right next to York City centre meant that a huge host of different and welcoming students bar were within easy reach.
Student union
The Student Union at York St. John is very active for a relatively small uni. There are lots of events on week nights and plenty of joint events with the University of York also. Most things were available regularly, including open mic nights, karaoke, live bands and stand up comedy. On the other hand, York St. John has never been able to get any HUGE bands or names at university events and for such things you are better off catching a train to Leeds.
