Quality of course and lecturers

I am in my final year of this course. And i would really advise any perspective students to really think hard about what they want before coming here. Believe me,even if you come for a visit to look around you will be greatly deceived, much like the prospectus. Tuition fees have broken the cap for the past two years and the course and teaching certainly has not improved.(maybe something to do with a multi million£ new building) I did film studies in my A levels and i learnt more,in greater depth with better teaching than i have done the 3 years ive been here getting myself into a lifetime of debt. First year your pretty much covering the basics..and i mean..BASICS. stuff that your taught in secondary school about what makes horrors scary. Not to mention for half the semester your thrown in with Performing arts students that are learning about film..so you can imagine what thats like and how dumbed down your lectures will be...when you have them ofcourse. Time tabling is a huge issue and lessons are often cancelled with little or no notice, or better yet, you get up to go to the lecture nice and early and the lecturer is around an hour and a half late. despite what the prospectus says its not a more practical than theory based course, there is alot of writing involved, more than practical work. That may be because they dont actually have sufficient equipment to supply for the amount of students. around 3/4 basic cameras for a 60+ course which is disgusting. Not only that..you have to share those cameras with others on Documentary Film and TV.So when both courses have film deadlines..its very difficult to get any equipment. Although the course is entitled 'FILM and video' you only get to work with film if you take the cinematography option in yr2.and the option to use it for your final year film. However there is no editing equipment for film, its all digital..which defeats alot of the point of shooting on film. This isnt just isolated to Film and Video..several of my friends are on psychology and counseling and animation, 2 have quit and moved to a different course and the others that have the same thoughts about their course as i do mine; not enough lectures for what your paying for, No challenge, too much written work and not enough equipment. The university itself is lovely, and the setting is beautiful, living on campus was the best time of my life. The library facilities are good but not great for your final year. The student union is getting better but there is overwhelming apathy at Newport and students just dont care, so there arent many clubs/societies that stretch your imagination, just alot of sport. This also means that alot of events put on are done badly or cancelled due to not enough interest. Newport isnt the nicest place in the world. Esp if its your first time in Wales. It often takes on the names pooport or zooport. Its just a grey, run down concrete city with alot of trouble. Nightlife is ok but not amazing, better to go to cardiff or bristol if you can afford it. One positive thing is that cost of living is significantly lower than anywhere in England. i only pay £200 a month rent for a houge 5 bedroomed house.but then i suppose it would have to be if tuiton fees keep rising... But really, Think very hard when considering coming here!!when they take you around and say 'we're hoping to have this installed next year.. all of this will be new'..etcetc dont expect it to be.We are still waiting for a new editing suit and studios that theyve installed a new lighting grid, no students are allowed to use?!.That was promised 4years ago.

The gym and sports dept is very new well equipt and easily accessable

Alot of sport societies but really not alot else..not much else is encouraged tbh. Just what youd expect from the basic Su.. sports like football, rugby, netball, trampolining, islamic society and the christian society.

University life

Newport isnt the nicest place in the world. Esp if its your first time in Wales. It often takes on the names pooport or zooport. Its just a grey, run down concrete city with alot of trouble. Nightlife is ok but not amazing, better to go to cardiff or bristol if you can afford it. Its very cheap to go out in a night in Newport, with student nights buy one drink get 2 free and free entry, There is also a couple of clubs where you pay £5 and its all you can drink all night. When living on campus, if you get in with good people you'll be up most of the night, but not for what the SU put on, just fun that can be had from living on campus.
