City University, London
City University, London, has its origins in the Northampton Institute, founded in 1894. The Institute - named after the Marquess of Northampton, on whose lands it was built - aimed to meet the educational, social and physical health needs of young people of the Finsbury area in the City of London. The institute focussed on engineering, physical sciences and ophthalmic optics, and pioneered the 'sandwich' course in the UK. The institute's technical emphasis was recognised in 1957 when it became a college of advanced technology. The University's Charter was granted in 1966.
The University has since then expanded to cover a broader range of subjects, including informatics, business and management, social sciences, health and law. It has also expanded considerably in size, both organically and by the incorporation of St Bartholomew's and Princess Alexandra and Newham College of Nursing and Midwifery, the Charterhouse College of Radiography, and the Inns of Court School of Law. The University continues to build on its close links with the City of London and the professions. IT does all this on the basis of a clear strategy, the frequent review of its courses and its role as 'the university for business and the professions'. Over 60% of students graduate with at least some exemption towards professional qualification or registration.
